Xanthan gum and triethyl citrate a green adjuvant combination

Adjuvants to control off-target drift in sprays and optimize the performance of active agents are gaining importance. Xanthan gum and triethyl citrate (trade name CITROFOL® AI) are two raw materials whose potential for the improvement of spray applications was demonstrated.

Jungbunzlauer, a leading producer of these raw materials, investigated relevant parameters such as droplet size distribution, cling to leaf, wettability and moisture retention. Xanthan gum decreased the fraction of driftable fines and improved the stability of suspensions and the cling to leaf in concentrations as low as 0.05 per cent (w/v). CITROFOL AI increased wettability, slowed down evaporation and reduced the occurrence of oversized spray droplets when used in concentrations between 0.25 and 0.50 per cent (v/v). Consequently, both raw materials represent effective bio-based and biodegradable options for adjuvant manufacturers.
