EBIC and New Ag International host digital roundtable on food chain security

The European Biostimulants Industry Council (EBIC) and New Ag International hosted a digital round-table discussion on the EU food chain on 14 May 2020, with an emphasis on the impact of Covid-19 and food-chain resilience.

The roundtable was convened in response to the ‘Farm-to-Fork Europe’ Conference and Exhibition, organised by EBIC and New Ag International for June 2020, being postponed because of the Covid-19 crisis.

On the panel were:

- Luca Bonini, President of the European Biostimulants Industry Council (EBIC) and CEO of Italpollina
- Raluca Marian, General Delegate of the Permanent Delegation, International Road Transport Union (IRU)
- Pekka Pesonen, Secretary-General of the European farmers’ and cooperatives’ umbrella group COPA-COGECA
- Fabien Santini, Deputy Head of Unit, Governance of Agri-Food Markets, DG AGRI, European Commission
- William Surman, Director of Public Affairs and Communications at FoodDrinkEurope

The discussion was moderated by Kristen Sukalac, Consulting Partner at Prospero & Partners.
After an introduction to the panel, each gave a summary of the challenges their sector or organisation is facing during the Covid-19 pandemic. The discussion then looked at how to build food-chain resilience, and then turning to the future, how this can be related to sustainability and policy developments. The European Commission is expected to release its latest Farm-to-Fork strategy in the coming weeks.

In closing the proceedings, and given the high number of audience questions that could not be covered because of time constraints, Sukalac suggested that EBIC and New Ag International might organise more digital roundtables in future to cover topics raised by the audience.
