New Ag International will bring Irrigation Association news and information to South America as the association’s newest publishing partner.

New Ag International agreed to publish IA news in its quarterly Spanish language edition as the official IA partner for South America. Irrigation Association members in the region covered by the agreement will receive the magazine.

The IA and New Ag International will also cooperate to bring information about international markets to the annual International Irrigation Show.

“This partnership will add value to IA membership in South America as well as the rest of the world,” said IA Executive Director Deborah Hamlin. “New Ag International will not only share information about irrigation efficiency in South America, it will help the IA tap into valuable sources of information about South American markets.”

PotashCorp. is trying to boost its stake in Chile's Soquimich for the second time in a month, according to international news reports quoted by FMB weekly report. It announced in advertisements taken out in the local press in Chile on Tuesday that it was offering to buy some 4.48 million Series B shares of Soquimich for some $58.8 million. Soquimich's Series B shares rose 4.26 percent on the Santiago bourse, to 6,900 pesos each. The offer is open for 30 days, closing on December 20, and would boost PotashCorp.'s stake in Soquimich to 29%, potentially making it the biggest shareholder. Potash last raised its stake in Soquimich in October, by 2%. At the time, it said it was not making a bid for the Chilean fertilizer maker, which is also the world's No. 1 producer of iodine and lithium.

T-Systems International, Inc., of San Diego, California and Chapin Watermatics, Inc. of Watertown, New York, announced on November 20th that they have amicably resolved their dispute over T-Systems’ patented drip irrigation technology featuring a flow regulating channel and single slit outlet port. As part of that resolution, Chapin has taken a license to several of T-Systems’ U.S. and international product and manufacturing patents, and the parties have agreed that for the next seven and a half years they will not be resorting to litigation with each other over drip tape products.

Chile's SQM, which produces potassium nitrate and sulphate (NOP and SOP) and the world's leading producer of iodine and lithium, saw its stock rise sharply on Wednesday, 18 Oct, after local press reports said Canada's PotashCorp had increased its ownership in the company.

Haifa Chemicals recently announced its new capability of supplying Greenhouse Grade Calcium Nitrate. As of early October 2006, Haifa steadily supplied this product at a capacity of several tens of thousands metric tons per year. The new production originates from a Joint Venture set up 3 years ago in Romania with the Romanian company Azumoresh. The deal included the supply of the Know-how by Haifai Chemicals. While Azumoresh manufactures the product, Haifa has got the exclusive marketing rights worldwide. This Greenhouse Grade Calcium Nitrate comes in addition to Haifa’s Calcium Nitrate Agri-Grade, available to the international marketplace for several years now.

The Sulphate of Potash Information Board (SOPIB- whose members are: Great Salt Lake Minerals Corporation, K+S Kali GmbH, SQM SA and Tessenderlo Chemie NV/SA.) recently announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously decided to share the annual SOPIB International Award equally between Dr. Abd El Hadi from the Agricultural Research Centre in Cairo - Egypt and Dr. El Kadi from the Desert Research Centre in Cairo - Egypt. The SOPIB International Award is presented each year in recognition of research that has led to a significant advance in the use of potassium sulphate to increase crop production and/or quality.

The rapid development of emerging greenhouse technologies in covering materials, structures, plant biotechnologies, crop management, and greenhouse automation, requires that the horticulture community, better understand how these technologies interact with each other and eventually how their effects can be efficiently controlled using innovative strategies. An interdisciplinary group of scientists and industry with interests in plant production, greenhouse engineering, and business development, will convene GreenSYS2007 - High Technology for Greenhouse System Management (High Tech. for Green. Man.), a conference in which crop, environment, management, education, and business development are considered as inter-related aspects of the high technology greenhouse system. New Ag International will be the official partner magazine of the event and will promote the event on a world wide scale.

During its Extraordinary General Assembly that took place in September, the EIA decided to transfer the EIA Headquarters from Mont de Marsan (South West France) to Aix en Provence (South East of France). Such move will facilitate communication within the EIA governing bodies and the contact with a number of members. During the same meeting, Jan Carlo di Paola, the current President of the EIA, announced that he wished to resign from the position.

Deere & Company announced on June 19th that it has acquired Roberts Irrigation Products – a manufacturer of high performance plastic micro and drip irrigation products for the agricultural, nursery, and greenhouse markets. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Roberts Irrigation will continue to be headquartered in San Marcos, CA. The acquisition of Roberts Irrigation provides Deere a foundation to grow its new business initiative in precision water systems.

“Among Deere & Company’s strategic growth opportunities, the water industry is one that makes very good sense,” said Mike McGrady, president of John Deere’s Precision Water Systems. “Water is an important natural resource for customers of John Deere equipment. Management of this limited resource will become even more critical in the future.”
