On June 13th, Haifa Chemicals management has decided to close down the company's Haifa plant until September. Haifa is a leading global producer of potassium nitrate. The move follows a 40 day strike by workers at the plant over failure to reach a new wage agreement.

At a landmark event last week at their controlled release production facilities in Heerlen, the Netherlands and Charleston US, executives from Scotts Professional and ICL Specialty Fertilizers announced a new name for the global professional business: Everris™.


The Swiss company Andermatt Biocontrol and the South African company Madumbi Bio Farms have formed a new partnership to strengthen their market position in South Africa. Both companies share a vision to develop sustainable environmentally-friendly solutions for the rapidly growing sustainable agricultural market in Southern Africa. Madumbi Bio Farms has acquired a majority stake of Andermatt South African subsidiary Andermatt South Africa (Pty) Ltd., which will trade as Madumbi Sustainable Agriculture (Pty) Ltd.


Hydro Nova Europe, the European subsidiary of Hydro Systems Company just announced the acquisition of Dosmatic, Inc. by Hydro Systems. Dosmatic are based in Carrollton, Texas, and service the European market from their operation in Bordeaux France.

Dosmatic is a leading manufacturer of environmentally friendly, non-electric chemical metering equipment. Hydro Systems is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of chemical proportioning and dispensing systems and an operating unit within Dover Corporation’s (NYSE:DOV) Fluid Management segment. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.


China fertilizer export tariffs for 2011 were announced by the Customs tariff Commission of the State Council on 15 December. The policy will be carried out from 1 January 2011.

The 2011 export tariffs remain 110% in the peak season and 7% in offseason. The 110% level is made up of a regular tax rate of 35% and a special export tariff of 75%. The low tax windows have been narrowed for urea, MAP and DAP. The benchmark prices to apply in the low tax window have also been lowered.


On 30 November, 2010, Andrew Osborne, Sales and Marketing Director of New Ag International, and also a Founding member of the company, resigned from the company to pursue other business interests. At the same date, his shareholding in the company was acquired by the other three Directors and Founding members, Jean Pierre Leymonie, Bruce Neale and Ralph Thawley.

On December 7th, 2010, the ICL Group (Israel Chemicals) announced that they had made an offer to acquire the Global Professional business of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE:SMG). Global Pro is a leading global provider of specialty fertilizers and horticultural and turf specialty products.

The proposed purchase price is US$270 in cash from ICL’s internal resources. The Global Pro’s Financials for the fiscal year ended September 2010 are $242 million revenues and EBITDA $31.4 million.


Becker Underwood announced mid-October that it has acquired Biological Control Products (Pty) Ltd (BCP). BCP is a leading company in Africa for solid-state fermentation of fungal products. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“The addition of BCP gives us manufacturing capability for a wide range of fungal products, a sales office for promotion of existing Becker Underwood products, and a new range of biorational products that we can now take to the rest of Africa and to our other global businesses,” said Peter Innes, CEO of Becker Underwood. 


Van Iperen BV is pleased to announce the foundation of Van Iperen International BV, a startup company that shall develop an international marketing and distribution concept for specialty fertilizers. Van Iperen International BV aims to sell worldwide via local distributors to high-tech agricultural and horticultural markets.

The ownership of the new company will primarily be the Van Iperen holding. Adam Nawrocki, owner of the Polish specialty fertilizer producer ADOB Sp at Poznan as well as Erik van den Bergh, who shall become the Managing Director of Van Iperen International BV, will both be minority shareholders.


The Bologna based italian company Biolchim S.p.a recently announced that Assietta Private Equity sgr has entered Biolchim’s equity by acquiring all the shares of Gianni Zamboni (27%), the founder of the Company in 1972. With Prima Spa Holding and Arca Invest already in the shareholding, this move brings to three the number of Private Equity funds in Biolchim capital.

At the same time, the company announced that the current management (Valenti/Acquafredda/Di Nardo) is also going to enter in the Company's equity by the end of October 2010.
